If Charles Darwin University and James Cook University are both on your list, you want the tropics, not a big capital-city campus. But these two are less alike than they look on a map.
CDU is the Northern Territory's uni, built around flexibility: it runs TAFE as well as degrees, and nearly half its degree students study online. JCU is a more traditional campus uni in Townsville and Cairns, strong in medicine, dentistry, vet and marine science.
JCU sits higher than CDU in the QS 2027 rankings, but not by enough to choose on. The real difference is who each uni is built for. CDU is shaped around Territorians and flexible study, with nearly half its degree students online. JCU is a more classic campus uni, with its strengths tied to the tropics and to specialist health, vet and marine degrees.
CDU took its current form in 2003, when Northern Territory University merged with the Menzies School of Health Research. It's dual-sector, running CDU TAFE alongside its degrees: 22,804 students in 2025, 13,907 of them in degrees and research. Its main campus is Casuarina, about 15 km from Darwin's CBD, with sites as far away as Alice Springs.
Two numbers tell you who studies here: in 2025, 17.7 per cent of CDU students were First Nations, and 45 per cent of degree students studied online. It came equal 551st in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (30th in Australia).
What that means for you: a uni shaped around the Territory and around fitting study into real life.
JCU was established in 1970 and describes itself as Australia's only university set up to focus on Northern Australia and the tropics. It's in the Innovative Research Universities group. Its main campus is in Douglas, about 13 km from Townsville's city centre, with a second at Smithfield, north of Cairns, and a new Cairns city building for health teaching.
It had about 20,000 enrolments in 2022 on its own figures, and came equal 438th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (26th in Australia).
What that means for you: a mid-sized campus uni with a clear specialty: anything tropical, from reef science to rural medicine.
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 551st (30th in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: 451 to 500 band (equal 30th in Australia)

Graduate median salary: $77,000 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 438th (26th in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: 326 to 350 band (23rd in Australia)
Student experience: 74.7% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)

This comes down to how you want to study. CDU is the flexible choice: most courses run online or on campus, and you can step in through TAFE or an enabling course. JCU is the traditional campus experience, with a trimester calendar still rolling out and specialist degrees such as dentistry and vet science built around labs, clinics and fieldwork.
CDU runs on semesters, plus a Summer Semester from 15 November 2027 that can help you catch up or finish sooner.
The bigger difference is how you study. Most courses run online or on campus, with the same fees either way; expect about 10 to 12 hours a week per subject online. Some degrees add placements or on-campus blocks, so check yours.
Where you're taught varies too: Law and primary teaching are at Danala in the CBD; Medicine, Psychological Science and Engineering Science at Casuarina.
JCU is mid-change, moving most courses from semesters to trimesters (three teaching periods a year) course by course up to 2027. Some degrees run a mix, so check your course page. Many, including Science and Nursing Science, take students in February and again in September.
JCU's pages show no uni-wide breadth model: you pick a degree and go deep. Where JCU stands apart is its specialist degrees:
The research link that matters most is the Menzies School of Health Research, which provides research mentors for students in the CDU Menzies Medical Program. Interested in health in remote and First Nations communities? That's the connection to ask about.
JCU's research shows up in places you'll go. Marine Science students do fieldwork at Orpheus Island Research Station and on research vessels, Cairns has the Daintree Rainforest Observatory, and vet students use Fletcherview, a working cattle station near Charters Towers. Learning on the reef rather than reading about it is JCU's strongest card.
Casuarina covers 56 hectares, with gardens, on-campus housing and its own radio station, Territory FM. Public buses run there, plus a free semester shuttle to the city. CDU lists 25 student groups, many of them cultural associations; with so many students online, join something early.
Our take: Casuarina feels relaxed and green, a campus that runs at Territory pace.
The Townsville campus sits on 386 hectares of bush next to Townsville University Hospital. The student association lists 18 clubs in Townsville and 3 in Cairns, plus 38 sports.
Our take: JCU Townsville feels like a campus town in the bush, with plenty of room to spread out.
On QILT data via ComparED, 74.4 per cent of CDU undergraduates rated their student support positively, above the 71.2 per cent national average: a good sign at a uni where so many study at a distance.
Both do well here. On QILT graduate survey data (via ComparED), 88.3 per cent of JCU's undergraduate graduates who wanted full-time work had found it, and 85.2 per cent of CDU's, both well above the 76.2 per cent national average. Median salaries were about the same ($77,200 and $77,000). Ask about your course.
The Careers Centre offers employability help, and placements are built into professional degrees: Nursing includes 800 hours of professional experience. Nursing, midwifery, teaching and social work students can look at the Commonwealth Prac Payment for mandatory placements. No internship guarantee is stated.
Careers and Employability offers advice and Employability Edge, eight self-paced career modules. Medicine students complete more than 4,000 hours of clinical training, and Nursing Science includes 880 hours of supervised practice. No internship guarantee is stated here either.
Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like where you live, your subjects or hardship).
CDU takes applicants from every state through SATAC (the South Australian admissions centre); for 2027, the equal consideration date is 1 December 2026. The general minimum is an ATAR of 60 after adjustments, but only about 10 per cent of new undergraduates (Semester 1 2025) got in on school results; the free Tertiary Enabling Program is a common way in. CDU lists no early offer scheme for 2027.
CDU medicine: the CDU Menzies Medical Program has 40 domestic places for 2027, 85 per cent for NT residents. School leavers need an ATAR of 85+ and an interview. Applications for 2027 closed on 9 October 2026.
JCU takes applications through QTAC. Its Guaranteed Admissions Plan promises a place in most courses with an ATAR of 73 (before adjustments) if you meet prerequisites; Medicine, Nursing Science and a few others are excluded. The page still shows 2026-cycle terms, so check with the uni for 2027. Early Offer Program nominations (made by your school) close on 16 October 2026.
JCU medicine: the lowest selection rank for Semester 1 2026 was 84.15 (selection isn't on ATAR alone). Applications for Medicine, Dentistry and Vet Science closed for 2027 on 30 September 2026.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and your capped share is the same at both (in 2026, $4,738 a year for nursing to $13,558 for medicine and $17,399 for law; 2027 amounts aren't out). HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront.
At CDU Village in Casuarina, Campus Living Villages lists 2027 dorm rooms at $256 to $339 a week and apartment rooms at $277 to $331, bills included (Campus Living Villages' CDU Village page), and CDU notes that Darwin rents are higher than most of Australia. JCU's 2026 weekly rates run from $233 to $642 a week in Townsville and $218 to $300 in Cairns.
International students: see CDU's international fees page; JCU lists international fees on each course page.

Neither is the better uni; they suit different lives. Check where your course is taught, whether it runs online and what placements it includes. Then think about where you want to live for the next three to six years, because both unis are tied closely to their cities.
