Put Griffith University and the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) side by side and you're answering two questions: where in South East Queensland do you want to study, and how? Griffith is the bigger, busier option, with nearly 44,000 students across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. UniSQ has about half that. Its home base is Toowoomba, plus Ipswich and Springfield near Brisbane.
Both teach in trimesters and both take applications through QTAC. So prestige won't decide this. Place, pace and campus will.
Griffith is about twice UniSQ's size and sits higher in the 2027 world rankings, with big campuses on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. UniSQ is smaller and regional at heart. If you want scale and a city or coast campus, Griffith fits. If you want a regional base, or a campus close to home around Toowoomba or Ipswich, look hard at UniSQ.
Griffith has been teaching since 1975 and belongs to the Innovative Research Universities group. It had 43,965 students in 2025 (a preliminary figure). The Gold Coast campus is the biggest, followed by Brisbane South (Nathan), with smaller campuses at Logan and South Bank and almost 8,000 students online. Mt Gravatt has closed for teaching, and Griffith expects to open a CBD site in the Treasury Building in 2027 for business, law and IT.
Griffith came equal 230th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (15th in Australia). For you, that means a large, established uni where your campus shapes almost everything.
UniSQ belongs to the Regional Universities Network and marks its 60th anniversary in 2027. It had 21,242 students in 2025, and in 2024, 46.3 per cent of its domestic students came from regional or remote areas.
Toowoomba is the original and largest campus, and the only one with residential colleges. Ipswich focuses on health, community and law; Springfield on engineering, aviation and digital media. UniSQ was equal 411th in QS 2027 (23rd in Australia). People rarely choose it for its ranking. They choose it because it fits where they live and how they need to study.

Both use trimesters, so mid-year starts are normal. The split is in how you'll study. At Griffith the big decision is your campus, because each is built around particular fields, from health on the Gold Coast to creative arts at South Bank. UniSQ is built for flexibility, with External and Online options and placement hours built in. Want a campus-centred degree? Griffith. Need study to fit around your life? UniSQ.
Griffith runs on trimesters, so many degrees can start in March, July or November.
Griffith stands out in how it matches campuses to fields:
Griffith tends to suit you if you:
UniSQ also runs three trimesters, starting on 15 February, 31 May and 13 September in 2027 (not every degree takes every intake). The bigger difference is how you study: many degrees run on campus, External or Online, and part-time study is available. External Nursing means theory online plus residential schools and placements.
Placements are written in: 840 hours in the Bachelor of Nursing and 80 days in the Bachelor of Education (Primary). Check the campus too: Paramedicine is taught only at Ipswich, and Engineering at Toowoomba and Springfield.
UniSQ tends to suit you if you:
For undergrads, Griffith's research shows up most in health: the Gold Coast campus sits inside a health and knowledge precinct next to the hospital, and Nathan has VR labs. There's no uni-wide research scheme for first-degree students, so ask your faculty how undergrads get involved.
UniSQ's research is easiest to see in its facilities. It says its Mount Kent Observatory is the only ground-based Southern Hemisphere site supporting NASA's TESS mission, and Springfield has a Boeing 737-800 flight simulator. Ipswich's Paramedic Simulation House and simulation ambulance are what health students use week to week.
Each Griffith campus has its own personality. Nathan sits in 260 hectares of Toohey Forest bushland, with a fitness centre: the leafy, classic-uni option. Gold Coast, on the tram line, and South Bank, in Brisbane's arts precinct, feel busier and more urban. Griffith lists over 60 clubs in Brisbane, and the Gold Coast guild says it has more than 60 on that campus.
Toowoomba is UniSQ's showpiece, with a Japanese Garden UniSQ describes as Australia's largest and most traditionally designed, an art gallery, a recreation centre, free parking and three residential colleges. It feels like a self-contained regional campus where you'll keep running into the same faces. A free shuttle links all three campuses. The Student Guild runs clubs and its SG Fit gym, though it gives no club count.
Counselling is free and confidential, and Student Disability and Accessibility arranges study adjustments. The GUMURRII Student Success Unit supports First Peoples students on all four campuses and online. The Learning and Study Skills Hub helps with assignments, and peer mentors are available.
Counselling is free, with up to 10 sessions a year in person, online or by phone. Accessibility, Wellbeing and Equity Services sets up study adjustments. First Nations Student Support runs the Ask Aunty online hub and free tutoring. What stands out is Student Success Advising: advisers check in before problems build, especially with regional and remote students, and contacted 10,198 students in 2025. The Student Guild adds a food pantry and bursaries.
On QILT data, 85 per cent of UniSQ graduates looking for full-time work had found it, with a median salary of $83,300. At Griffith the figures were 72.9 per cent and $74,000 (national averages 76.2 per cent and $74,000). Outcomes vary by course, so check your field.
The Careers and Employment Service offers career consultants and a Careers Fair, and its Industry Mentoring Program has run for more than 20 years. Griffith doesn't name or promise a uni-wide internship, so ask what's built into your degree.
UniSQ's real strength is the placement hours built into professional degrees like nursing, teaching and engineering, and its Placement Bursary helps with travel and accommodation for compulsory placements. It doesn't promise an internship.
You apply to both through QTAC. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like your subjects or where you live).
Nursing, lowest selection rank offered in Trimester 1 2026 (including adjustments): UniSQ 60.10 at Toowoomba and 63.45 at Ipswich; Griffith 70.25 at Logan. These are past results, not guarantees.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) the government pays part of your fees and your capped share is the same at both: in 2026, $4,738 a year for Nursing and Education and $9,537 for Engineering, Science and IT. HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront.
Griffith's Nathan colleges start from $192 a week (no year stated) with utilities and Wi-Fi, plus levies. At the Gold Coast, Campus Living Villages' Griffith University Village page lists full-year 2027 rates of $372.95 to $544.70 a week, from a room in a shared apartment to a studio, all bills included; Logan has no published prices. UniSQ's three Toowoomba colleges list 2027 fees of about $171 to $253 a week for most self-catered rooms, with utilities and internet (single-occupancy flats aren't on the 2027 list; they were $281 a week in 2026, the latest price published). There's no UniSQ housing at Ipswich or Springfield.
International students: see UniSQ's fees page; Griffith shows international fees on each degree page.

Neither is the better uni. Your next step: find out which campus teaches your degree at each, because that changes everything. Compare the entry score, then visit that campus. For Griffith, do the trip at peak hour. For UniSQ Toowoomba, ask to see a residential college.
