La Trobe University and Monash University have a lot in common on paper. Both are centred on big suburban campuses and both let you start nursing, law or physio straight from school. So the question is what kind of uni you want around you.
Monash is a Group of Eight uni (eight leading research unis) and came 5th in Australia in the QS World University Rankings 2027. La Trobe came 17th, but it has regional campuses, an early offer scheme and a higher student-experience score on QILT's national survey.
On rankings Monash is clearly ahead, sitting in Australia's top five while La Trobe sits 17th in QS 2027. But size and reach run the other way: Monash is huge and Melbourne-based, while La Trobe is smaller and stretches into regional Victoria and Albury-Wodonga. Choose on which of those suits your life, not the ranking alone.
La Trobe was founded in 1967 and is in the Innovative Research Universities group. Its main campus is in Bundoora, 16 km from the CBD on 235 hectares of bushland, with a City campus, a Sydney campus and four regional campuses: Bendigo, Shepparton, Mildura and Albury-Wodonga.
It had 39,648 students in 2025, including 7,360 domestic students from rural or remote areas, and came equal 241st in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (17th in Australia).
What that means for you: a uni that knows regional students well and spreads its teaching across Victoria.
Monash was founded in 1958 and named after Sir John Monash, the engineer and military leader. It's a Group of Eight member with 78,230 students in 2024, and describes itself as Australia's largest uni. It came 31st in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (5th in Australia).
Clayton is the main campus, with more than 50,000 students a year, alongside Caulfield, Peninsula, Parkville (pharmacy) and the Alfred (health research), plus campuses in Malaysia and Indonesia.
What that means for you: a big, research-heavy uni where your campus shapes daily life as much as your course.

Both let you start a profession straight from Year 12, so this one turns on how you want to study. La Trobe leans into placements and regional health training, with Bendigo a real hub. Monash leans into double degrees and range, with more than 40 combinations in Arts alone. Want hands-on and close to home? La Trobe. Want two degrees at once? Monash.
La Trobe runs two 13-week semesters plus shorter terms and a summer period. Many professional degrees start straight from school, including Physiotherapy (Honours), Laws (Honours) and Nursing. Health and Education degrees include compulsory placements.
The regional campuses matter: every one teaches Nursing and Education, and Bendigo adds physio, pharmacy, paramedicine, law, engineering and IT, plus Dental Science (Honours), taught only there.
Monash also lets you start professional degrees from school, including Laws (Honours), Education and school-leaver entry to medicine. Its Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) takes four years, with a common first year and then 10 specialisations, and is accredited by Engineers Australia.
Where Monash stands out is double degrees. Its 2027 Undergraduate Course Guide says more than 90 per cent of Law students take one, and Arts alone has more than 40 combinations.
Into tech? Monash says it's the only Group of Eight uni with a whole faculty dedicated to IT.
La Trobe's pages don't show a uni-wide undergraduate research scheme, so ask at Open Day about honours projects or research placements in your course. Students who come in through the Aspire early offer are also eligible for a $1,000 overseas study grant, La Trobe says.
Monash came 61st in the world in THE's 2027 rankings, but its pages don't show a uni-wide undergraduate research scheme either, so ask your faculty what you can do before honours. It also has a centre in Prato, Italy, worth asking about if you want time overseas.
Bundoora is a bushland campus with tram and bus stops a five-minute walk from the residences. The La Trobe Student Union runs student life at Bundoora, and the La Trobe Student Association covers the regional and City campuses. Clubs are moving to a new approach, with details due by the end of October 2026.
Our take: calm, leafy and low-key, a place you'll get to know quickly.
Clayton is a campus town, with housing, sport, libraries, health services, food and shops. There's no train station on campus: you take the train to Huntingdale, then a bus. A free shuttle links Clayton and Caulfield, where the station is opposite the campus. Monash talks of hundreds of clubs across its campuses.
Our take: big, busy and self-contained, almost a small city, so test the commute before you commit.
On QILT's student survey data (via ComparED), 70.9 per cent of La Trobe undergraduates rated their support positively, about the national average of 71.2 per cent; at Monash it was 67.4 per cent. Either way, book in early rather than waiting until you're stuck.
On QILT graduate survey data (via ComparED), 75.2 per cent of La Trobe's undergraduate graduates who wanted full-time work had found it, and 77.2 per cent at Monash: about the same. Median salaries were $70,400 and $73,900. Ask each uni about your field.
La Trobe's Career Ready service runs the CareerHub jobs portal and workshops, plus GradWISE for students with disability. Placements are compulsory in Health and Education degrees. La Trobe's pages don't mention an internship guarantee.
The Monash Innovation Guarantee gives undergraduates in eligible degrees a three-week industry challenge with one of 50 partners, with no application, if you have elective space. The 2027 Australian round runs from 11 to 29 January 2027. Faculties add their own, like Industry-based Learning in IT and the Clinical Legal Guarantee in Law.
You apply to both through VTAC. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like where you live or what you've been through).
La Trobe's Aspire Early Offer Program gives Year 12s a conditional offer (confirmed once your results are in) before exams finish. Applications for 2027 closed on 4 September 2026. The Regional Benefits Program guarantees regional students with an ATAR of 80+ a place at a regional campus, subject to prerequisites; check the 2027 terms with the uni.
Monash lists no early offer scheme. The Monash Guarantee promises an offer at a lower ATAR if you have an equity background, such as financial disadvantage or a regional home: for 2027, 77 for Commerce, 75 for Engineering and 85 for Laws. You must have finished Year 12 in 2022 or later with no uni study since, and made the VTAC Equity Schemes and Scholarships application, which closed on 9 October 2026.
Lowest selection ranks for school leavers, 2026 entry (including bonus points):
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and you pay a capped amount, the same at both ($4,738 a year for nursing or education to $17,399 for law or commerce in 2026; 2027 amounts aren't out). HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront.
La Trobe's 2027 Bundoora rate card lists single rooms from $245 a week at Chisholm College to $290 at Menzies College, with utilities and internet included. Monash's 2027 rates run from $355.95 to $443.80 a week at Clayton Residential Village.
