If Monash University and Australian Catholic University (ACU) are both on your list, you're weighing up a giant and a specialist. This article is about one ACU campus: ACU Melbourne, the St Patrick's campus in Fitzroy, on the edge of the city centre.
Nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, teaching, psychology, law and business run at both. Where you'd study is the big difference: Monash's nursing and allied health are at suburban Clayton and Peninsula, while ACU Melbourne is a short walk from Parliament Station.
On world rankings Monash is well ahead: a Group of Eight uni in Australia's top five in both 2027 lists. ACU is smaller and focused on education, health, law and business, and its students rate their experience more highly on QILT data. If research standing and breadth matter most, Monash has the edge. If you want a focused inner-city campus, ACU Melbourne deserves a proper look.
Monash, founded in 1958, is a Group of Eight member and huge: it reports 78,230 students in 2024 and calls itself the largest university in Australia.
Undergraduates study at four main Melbourne campuses: Clayton (the biggest, with more than 50,000 students a year), Caulfield, Peninsula and Parkville. Monash came 31st in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (fifth in Australia) and third in Australia in THE 2027. For you, that means enormous choice and serious academic standing, in a place big enough that you'll need to find your own corner of it.
ACU opened in 1991, when four Catholic colleges merged, with roots in the mid-1800s training teachers for Catholic schools. It had 35,112 students in 2025 across seven Australian campuses plus Rome.
ACU Melbourne sits at 115 Victoria Parade, Fitzroy. ACU is in the 851 to 900 band in the QS World University Rankings 2027, so Monash is well ahead on rankings. But on QILT's student survey data, 80.5 per cent of ACU undergraduates rated their experience positively, above the national average of 76.5 per cent (uni-wide, not ACU Melbourne alone).

QS World University Rankings 2027: 851 to 900 band (equal 33rd in Australia)

Monash gives you range: professional degrees from day one, double degrees as standard, and fields ACU doesn't teach, such as engineering and pharmacy. ACU gives you focus, with health, teaching and law at one inner-city campus and ethics and community units in every degree. If you want options, Monash. If your field is one ACU Melbourne teaches, it's a real contender.
Monash lets you start most professional degrees straight from school, including Laws (Honours), Engineering (Honours) and school-leaver Medicine. Double degrees are part of the culture: more than 90 per cent of Law students take one.
Monash says it's the only Group of Eight uni with a whole faculty for IT, and pharmacy has its own campus at Parkville. Nursing is at Clayton and Peninsula, and most allied health at Peninsula, near Frankston, so check your campus.
Monash tends to suit you if you:
What makes ACU different is the Core Curriculum. Every degree includes two philosophy, ethics or theology units (such as Being Human) and a community engagement unit linked to your course. Some students love this; others would rather spend those units elsewhere, so read the list first.
At ACU Melbourne you can study nursing, midwifery, paramedicine, occupational therapy, speech pathology, teaching, psychology, law, business and arts. Physiotherapy isn't offered there for 2027, and IT is only at North Sydney and online.
ACU Melbourne tends to suit you if you:
For undergraduates, Monash's research shows most in its specialist sites, such as Parkville for pharmacy. It doesn't describe a uni-wide research scheme for first-degree students, so ask your faculty at Open Day how undergraduates get involved.
For an ACU Melbourne undergraduate, the most visible global link is the Rome campus, which all ACU students can use during their degree. If research matters to you, ask how students in your course take part.
Clayton is a campus city: more than 50,000 students a year, on-campus housing, sport facilities and food. The Monash Student Association has more than 100 clubs and societies there, with over 10,000 members.
Getting there takes planning: there's no train station on campus, so you take the train to Huntingdale and then a bus. Caulfield is easier, with its station opposite.
ACU Melbourne is a city campus in Fitzroy, about 600 metres from Parliament Station, with six tram routes nearby. ACU says every campus has student-run clubs, such as the Melbourne Midwifery Society, though it gives no count.
It feels like part of the inner city rather than a world of its own, with the CBD within walking distance.
On QILT graduate survey data (via ComparED), 81 per cent of ACU's undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it, against 77.2 per cent at Monash (national average 76.2 per cent). Median salaries were about the same: $73,900 at Monash and $73,100 at ACU. Ask how graduates in your field have done.
The Monash Innovation Guarantee gives eligible undergraduates a three-week industry challenge with one of 50 partners, no application needed, if you have 6 credit points of elective space. The next Australian run is 11 to 29 January 2027. There are credit-bearing internships too, though Monash can't guarantee your ideal placement.
ACU builds placement into its professional degrees: the Bachelor of Nursing requires at least 800 hours. Its CareerHub and paid Student Jobs on Campus help too, and careers support lasts up to two years after you finish. ACU's pages don't promise an internship or job.
You apply to both through VTAC, Victoria's admissions centre. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus any adjustment factors (bonus points for things like your subjects, where you live or hardship).
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) the government pays part of your fees; your capped share is the same at both. In 2026 the cap was $4,738 a year for Nursing and Education, $9,537 for allied health, Science and Engineering, and $17,399 for Law, Business and humanities. HECS-HELP, a government loan, lets you pay later.
On Monash's 2027 rates, Clayton Residential Village costs $355.95 to $443.80 a week, utilities and internet included. ACU has no Melbourne housing of its own; its affiliated options include UniLodge Melbourne Central, at $485 to $579 a week on full-year 2027 rates (UniLodge's Melbourne Central page), and UniLodge Melbourne CBD, at $444 to $684 (UniLodge's page for it); ACU says rent includes utilities and internet.
International students: see Monash's fees page and ACU's international fees page.

Neither is the better uni; they're built for different students. Check which campus your course is taught on, because Clayton, Peninsula and Fitzroy are three very different weeks. Then do the commute from home to each at 8am, and get to both Open Days.
