On paper, Monash University and the University of Queensland look a lot alike. Both are huge Group of Eight unis (eight leading research unis), both let you start law and engineering straight from Year 12, and they sit fifth and sixth in Australia on QS 2027.
So the differences are in the details. Monash spreads you across suburban campuses and leans into double degrees. UQ centres on one big riverside campus. And you're also choosing a state.
Reputation won't split these two: they sit next to each other in Australia's QS 2027 list, and both are Group of Eight unis. The difference is shape. Monash is bigger and spread across several suburban campuses, each with its own specialities. UQ puts most students on one large riverside campus, with separate sites for health and for vet and agriculture.
Size is Monash's headline. It calls itself Australia's largest university, with 78,230 students in 2024. Clayton, in Melbourne's south-east, is the main campus; Caulfield, Peninsula and Parkville handle particular disciplines, so check where your course is taught.
Founded in 1958 and named after Sir John Monash, it came 31st in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (fifth in Australia) and third in Australia in THE 2027. For you: huge choice, spread across campuses.
UQ puts most of student life on one campus: St Lucia, about 7 km from Brisbane's city centre on 114 hectares along the river. Health students also use Herston, and vet science is taught at Gatton, a 1,000-hectare working farm.
Established in 1909 as the state's first university, UQ had about 60,000 students in 2025 (preliminary figures). It was equal 40th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (sixth in Australia) and fourth in Australia in THE 2027.
QS World University Rankings 2027: 31st (5th in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: 61st (3rd in Australia)
Student experience: 74.5% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 77.2% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $73,900 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 40th (6th in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: equal 73rd (4th in Australia)
Student experience: 79% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 80.2% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $74,300 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
Both let you start law, engineering and other professional degrees straight after Year 12, so neither makes you wait. The difference is in the extras. Monash pushes double degrees and has a whole IT faculty. UQ's standout is its farm campus at Gatton for vet, agriculture and animal science. Pick the extra that fits your plans.
Monash students double up. According to Monash's 2027 course guide, more than 90 per cent of Law students and more than half of Arts students take a double degree (two bachelor degrees studied together).
School leavers can go straight into Laws (Honours), Engineering (Honours) and Medicine; four-year Engineering (Honours) offers 10 specialisations to pick after first year. Monash says, in its 2027 undergraduate course guide, that it's the only Group of Eight uni with a whole faculty for IT. Many courses take a mid-year start.
Monash tends to suit you if you:
UQ also lets you start professional degrees from school, including Engineering (Honours), Laws (Honours), Nursing and Veterinary Science (Honours). Room for electives depends on the degree.
Where you study depends on your field. Most degrees run at St Lucia, medicine and allied health use Herston, and agriculture and vet students are at Gatton, linked by a free Intercampus bus. In 2027, Semester 1 starts on 22 February.
UQ tends to suit you if you:
At Monash, the most visible hands-on route is industry: the Monash Innovation Guarantee (see section 6) and options such as Engineering's Industry Innovation Program. Want lab research? Ask your faculty at Open Day.
UQ's research homes include the Institute for Molecular Bioscience and the Queensland Brain Institute. More useful to you, Research Opportunities is one of the named experiences UQ promotes, so you can chase research during a bachelor degree.
Clayton is big, with housing, sport, libraries, health services and shops. There's no train station on campus: you take the train to Huntingdale, then a bus. A free shuttle links Clayton and Caulfield, and Peninsula has shuttles to Clayton and Frankston station. The Monash Student Association lists over 100 clubs at Clayton. The feel: a self-contained suburban campus town. Easy if you live nearby; budget the travel time if you don't.
St Lucia is on CYU's Top 5 Uni Campuses in Australia list. It's built around the heritage-listed Great Court, with UQ Lakes and what UQ calls the state's largest multi-sport precinct. The CityCat ferry has its own terminal, and UQ lists over 200 clubs and societies. The feel: leafy, open and built for spending the whole day on campus.
On QILT student survey data, 68.6 per cent of UQ undergraduates and 67.4 per cent of Monash's rated their support positively: about the same, and both a little under the national 71.2. The help is there, so find it early.
On QILT graduate data (via ComparED), 80.2 per cent of UQ graduates who wanted full-time work had found it, and 77.2 per cent of Monash's (national 76.2). Median salaries were about the same: $74,300 and $73,900. A three-point gap is small, so ask about your course.
The standout is the Monash Innovation Guarantee: a three-week industry challenge unit with one of 50 partners, with no application or interview. The catch: you need room for an elective. Engineering also has a Co-operative Education Program.
Named options include Global Experiences, UQ Ventures for would-be founders, internships and volunteering, and the UQ Employability Award recognises what you do outside class. Credit for internships depends on your faculty. No internship is promised.
You apply to Monash through VTAC (even from interstate) and to UQ through QTAC. Neither runs an early offer scheme. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like hardship or where you live).
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and your capped share is the same at both. In 2026 it was $9,537 a year for Science or Engineering (2027 amounts aren't out yet). A HECS-HELP loan means no upfront payment.
Monash's 2027 rates run from $355.95 to $443.80 a week. UQ's listed college prices (year not stated) run from $509 to $777 a week; UQ-run Kev Carmody House starts from $414.
