You apply to Queensland University of Technology and the University of Southern Queensland through QTAC, but they offer two different ways of doing uni. QUT is a big inner-city uni with more than 52,000 students. UniSQ is regional at heart: based in Toowoomba, with campuses at Ipswich and Springfield and many degrees you can study externally or online. Do you want the city at your doorstep, or a uni that fits around your life?
QUT ranks higher in QS 2027 and is more than twice UniSQ's size, so it's the natural pick if you want a big city uni. That isn't everyone. UniSQ is built around regional students and flexible study, and if that describes you, its smaller scale and spread of campuses may matter more than a rankings gap.
QUT became a university in 1989, though its roots go back to 1849. Its tagline is the university for the real world, and that's the pitch: practical, career-focused degrees.
It's big: 52,423 students in 2024, on two inner-city campuses, Gardens Point in the centre of Brisbane and Kelvin Grove, about 3 km out. It came 240th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (16th in Australia). For you: a busy city uni where you'll be one of many.
UniSQ is in the Regional Universities Network and turns 60 in 2027. Toowoomba is its main campus and home to its residential colleges. Ipswich focuses on health, community and law; Springfield, about 30 minutes from Brisbane's CBD, on engineering, aviation and digital production.
It had 21,242 students in 2025, and in 2024, 46.3 per cent of its domestic students came from regional or remote areas. It came equal 411th in the QS World University Rankings 2027. For you: a mid-sized uni built for students who don't live next door to a big-city campus.

QUT gives you a classic city-uni structure: two semesters, double degrees and QUT You units in every course. UniSQ is built for flexibility, with three trimesters, several study modes and a choice of campuses. Studying full time on campus? QUT will feel natural. If study has to fit around the rest of your life, UniSQ is built for that.
A classic city-uni year. Two semesters plus a summer period; in 2027, Semester 1 classes start on 22 February.
Suits you if you want to study full time on campus in the city.
Built for flexibility. UniSQ runs on trimesters: in 2027, starting 15 February, 31 May and 13 September, though not every degree takes students in all three. Depending on the degree, you can study on campus, externally or online, full time or part time.
Suits you if you need to study externally or part time, or want to start in May or September.
QUT's research is most reachable through named schemes: the Vacation Research Experience Scheme, and Cooperative Education for Enterprise Development, which puts final-year science and engineering students on industry projects.
Springfield has robotics and power labs and a Boeing 737-800 flight simulator. UniSQ says its Mount Kent Observatory is the only ground-based support in the Southern Hemisphere for NASA's TESS mission. Into space or aviation? Ask how undergraduates get involved.
Getting there is easy. Gardens Point has its own CityCat stop and is a short walk from Central and South Bank stations; Kelvin Grove is on the Northern Busway, with a free shuttle between them. All parking is paid. Kelvin Grove has the $80 million Creative Industries Precinct, and the QUT Guild runs the student scene.
The feel: Gardens Point feels like part of the CBD, with the city right outside.
Toowoomba has the UniSQ Art Gallery and a Japanese Garden that UniSQ says is Australia's largest. Parking is free at Toowoomba and Ipswich, and a free shuttle links all three campuses. The UniSQ Student Guild runs clubs and the SG Fit gym.
The feel: a self-contained campus where the residential colleges set the social rhythm.
If you're studying from a distance, UniSQ's check-in approach is worth a lot.
UniSQ leads on the numbers. On QILT data via ComparED, 85 per cent of UniSQ undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it, against 78.2 per cent at QUT and 76.2 per cent nationally. UniSQ's median salary was higher too: $83,300 against $73,100. Outcomes vary by course, so ask about yours.
Corporate Partners in Excellence pairs a business scholarship with two 15-week internships, and QUT says its creative arts area offers more than 750 internships a year. QUT's pages don't promise an internship.
Career ready ran 768 one-on-one career appointments in 2025. Placements are built into nursing, teaching and engineering, and a Placement Bursary helps with travel costs. UniSQ's pages don't promise an internship either.
Both use QTAC. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like your subjects, where you live or hardship), capped at 10 at both.
Nursing, Semester or Trimester 1 2026: QUT's threshold (lowest adjusted score offered) was 74.00; UniSQ's lowest selection rank was 60.10 at Toowoomba and 63.45 at Ipswich.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part and your capped share is the same at both: in 2026, up to $4,738 a year for nursing or education, $9,537 for engineering or science and $17,399 for law or business. 2027 amounts aren't out. HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront.
UniSQ has published 2027 fees for its three self-catered Toowoomba colleges: most rooms are about $171 to $253 a week, utilities and internet included (single-occupancy flats aren't on the 2027 list; they were $281 a week in 2026, the latest price published). QUT lists no housing of its own; it points to private complexes at about $265 to $500 a week (no year given).
International students: see QUT's international study pages and UniSQ's international fees page.

Your next step: look up your course at both, check its campus and study mode, and compare QUT's guaranteed rank with UniSQ's latest entry score. Then try the trip you'd make each week: a CityCat ride or a Toowoomba college will tell you a lot.
