University of Melbourne vs La Trobe University: Which Is Right for You in 2027?

Introduction

If the University of Melbourne and La Trobe University are both on your list, the first question is usually the entry score. For 2026 entry, UniMelb's lowest selection rank for Biomedicine was 90.00; La Trobe's at Bundoora was 60.00 (VTAC's December round). That gap is real.

But the score isn't the whole story. UniMelb has you study broadly first, then add a master's for careers like engineering and teaching. La Trobe lets you start many professional degrees straight from school.

The short version

  • Lean UniMelb if you want to explore outside your field before you commit.
  • Lean La Trobe if you want to start teaching, nursing, law or allied health straight after Year 12.
  • Lean UniMelb if your ATAR could reach 99.90: for most courses, that guarantees its Chancellor's Scholarship.
  • Lean La Trobe if you want cheaper uni housing: Bundoora singles start from $245 a week in 2027, against UniMelb's 2027 rates from $448.
  • Lean La Trobe if student support matters: its QILT support score is 8 points ahead.

1. Overview and Reputation

On reputation, UniMelb is clearly ahead: first in Australia in THE 2027 and equal 22nd in the world in QS, against La Trobe's equal 241st. But a ranking won't tell you how your first year will feel. The real question is whether UniMelb's higher entry scores and big, postgraduate-heavy, international campus suit you better than La Trobe's lower entry bar and regional reach.

UniMelb (founded 1853) is a Group of Eight uni, one of the leading research unis. In 2027 it came first in Australia in THE and equal 22nd in the world in QS.

Most undergraduate degrees are taught at Parkville, a short walk from the CBD. More than half its students (53 per cent) are on a graduate degree, and 46 per cent are international.

What it means for you: a big, academic, very international place.

La Trobe (founded 1967) belongs to the Innovative Research Universities group. Its biggest campus is Bundoora in Melbourne's north, with a City campus and four regional campuses: Bendigo, Shepparton, Albury-Wodonga and Mildura.

It had 39,648 students in 2025, and came equal 241st in QS 2027 and 291st in THE 2027.

What it means for you: the ranking gap with UniMelb is real. What La Trobe offers instead is lower entry scores, professional degrees from day one and a strong regional network.

2. Academic Focus and Teaching Style

This is the biggest difference between them. At UniMelb you go broad first and, for engineering, teaching or architecture, add a master's. At La Trobe you can start teaching, engineering and many health degrees straight after school, with placements built in. Unsure what you want? UniMelb gives you room to find out. Already sure? La Trobe gets you there sooner, usually with a lower entry score.

At UniMelb you start with a broad bachelor's. Most degrees need at least four subjects outside your home faculty (called breadth).

Plan for this: architecture, engineering, IT, teaching, urban planning and data science run through Graduate Degree Packages, where a bachelor's leads into a set master's. Engineering leads into degrees such as the Master of Civil Engineering, two or three years full time. Build those years into your plans and budget.

UniMelb suits you if you:

  • want to explore before you specialise
  • are happy to plan on a master's
  • like a strongly academic culture

La Trobe takes the direct route. Laws (Honours), Nursing, Physiotherapy (Honours) and Education start straight from Year 12, with Pharmacy and Dental Science at Bendigo and Civil Engineering (Honours), accredited by Engineers Australia. Health and Education degrees include compulsory placements.

Second way in: La Trobe College Australia diplomas at Bundoora take 12 months and give up to a year of credit into a bachelor degree, with guaranteed progression if you meet the requirements.

La Trobe suits you if you:

  • know the profession you want
  • want placements built into your degree
  • would rather study in a regional city such as Bendigo

3. Research and Global Impact

University of Melbourne

UniMelb has 70+ research centres and institutes; ask your faculty which projects take undergraduates. Going overseas is well trodden: 20 per cent of undergraduates had an international experience (as of December 2025).

La Trobe University

La Trobe doesn't point to a uni-wide undergraduate research scheme, so ask your course team. One concrete extra: Aspire early offer students are eligible for a $1,000 grant towards study overseas.

Parkville is easy to reach, with trams at the gate and Parkville station close by. UMSU, the student union, has more than 230 affiliated clubs, and students come from 150+ nationalities.

The feel: Parkville is part of the city, so your social life can spill into the CBD as easily as it stays on campus.

La Trobe University

Bundoora is a 235-hectare bushland campus 16 km from the CBD, with trams and buses a five-minute walk from the residences. Student life runs through the La Trobe Student Union at Bundoora. Its clubs page says clubs are moving to a new approach, with details due by the end of October 2026. There's housing on every regional campus too.

The feel: a green suburb of its own, with room to spread out.

7. Cost, Entry and Lifestyle

Getting in

Apply to both through VTAC. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus bonus points (adjustment factors) for things like where you live or your circumstances.

UniMelb lists no early offer scheme. Access Melbourne publishes guaranteed ATARs for 2027 for regional, financially disadvantaged and some other applicants, such as 74 for Arts and 82 for Biomedicine. Applications for 2027 closed on 9 October 2026. In Year 11? The free Extension Program lets VCE students take uni subjects that can add 3 to 5 points to their ATAR aggregate.

La Trobe's Aspire Early Offer Program, including a stream that needs no ATAR, closed for 2027 on 4 September 2026. Its Regional Benefits Program guarantees a regional campus place to regional students with an ATAR of 80 or more (Physiotherapy 85, Dental Science 90; check with the uni for 2027). Lowest selection ranks at Bundoora, VTAC December 2025 round: Laws (Honours) 90.25, Nursing 70.15.

What it costs

In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP, a government-subsidised place) your share is capped and the same at both: in 2026, $4,738 a year for Nursing, $17,399 for Law and Commerce. HECS-HELP, a government loan, means nothing upfront.

UniMelb's Chancellor's Scholarship ($17,500 to $32,500) goes automatically to students with an ATAR of 99.90 for most courses. The Narrm Scholarship pays $6,500 a year; 2027 applications closed on 9 October 2026.

La Trobe's Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship (Aspire) pays $5,000 a year to top Aspire students with an ATAR of 80+. The Regional Benefits Program offers up to $5,000 a year (check with the uni for 2027).

Where you'll live

On 2027 prices, a Bundoora single room costs $245 to $300 a week, with utilities and internet included. UniMelb's 2027 rates run from $448 to $786 a week at The Lofts at Melbourne Connect.

International students: see UniMelb's fees page and La Trobe's international study pages.
