When the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland share a shortlist, the bigger question is usually: will you move interstate? Reputation won't settle it. Both are Group of Eight unis (eight leading research unis), and both sit in Australia's top six in the QS World University Rankings 2027.
How you want to study will. UniMelb asks you to go broad first and, for careers like engineering or teaching, finish with a master's. UQ lets you start engineering, law or vet science straight from Year 12.
Reputation won't split these two: both are Group of Eight unis in Australia's top six on QS 2027, and UniMelb's higher placing isn't a reason to move cities on its own. The real difference is who's around you. At UniMelb more than half the students are postgraduates; at UQ most are doing a bachelor degree, like you.
The University of Melbourne was established in 1853, making it Victoria's oldest uni. Its home is Parkville, a short walk from Melbourne's CBD, and most undergraduate degrees are taught there.
It has the equivalent of more than 58,000 full-time students, and 53 per cent are graduate students. That tells you how UniMelb thinks: many careers here start with a broad bachelor's and end with a master's. It was first in Australia in THE 2027 and equal 22nd in the world in QS 2027. Expect an intense academic culture with plenty of older students around you.
The University of Queensland was established in 1909 as the state's first university, and it calls itself Queensland's oldest and largest. The main campus is St Lucia, on 114 hectares along the Brisbane River about 7 km from the city centre. Health students also use Herston, and vet science is taught at Gatton, a 1,000-hectare working farm.
UQ had about 60,000 students in 2025, more than 36,000 of them in bachelor degrees. It came equal 40th in QS 2027 (sixth in Australia) and fourth in Australia in THE 2027. What you get is a big campus uni where undergraduates are the majority.
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 22nd (2nd in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: equal 34th (1st in Australia)
Student experience: 70.6% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 61.6% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $67,900 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 40th (6th in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: equal 73rd (4th in Australia)
Student experience: 79% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 80.2% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $74,300 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
This comes down to timing. At UniMelb you explore first, and for engineering, architecture or teaching you'll add a master's on top. At UQ you can start engineering, law or vet science straight after Year 12 as an honours bachelor's degree. Still working out what you want? UniMelb gives you room. Already sure? UQ gets you there sooner.
UniMelb's Melbourne curriculum (launched in 2008 as the Melbourne Model) means a broad three-year bachelor's, then specialise later. Most degrees include at least four breadth subjects from outside your home faculty.
Plan for this: architecture, engineering, IT and teaching are reached through a bachelor's followed by a master's. UniMelb's engineering master's degrees, such as the Master of Civil Engineering, mostly take three years full time (two with relevant prior study), so engineering takes about five years in all. Count those years in your budget.
UniMelb tends to suit you if you:
UQ runs the model most students expect: choose a degree and go straight into your field. School leavers can start the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), Laws (Honours), Nursing and Veterinary Science (Honours) from day one. No bachelor's-then-master's detour.
Most students are at St Lucia; medicine and allied health use Herston, and agriculture and vet students are at Gatton. The year runs on two semesters, with Semester 1 2027 starting on 22 February.
UQ tends to suit you if you:
UniMelb has more than 70 research centres and institutes. That depth matters most if you plan on honours or a master's. Going overseas is part of the picture too: 20 per cent of its undergraduates had done an international experience (as of December 2025).
UQ's research homes include the Queensland Brain Institute and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience. More useful to you, Research Opportunities is one of the named experiences UQ offers students, so ask your faculty early how to join a project.
Parkville is one of the easiest campuses in the country to get to, with nine tram routes at its main stop and Parkville station right there. UMSU, the student union, has more than 230 affiliated clubs, and 46 per cent of UniMelb's students are international.
The feel: Parkville blends into the city, so your social life is as likely to happen in the surrounding streets or the CBD as on campus.
St Lucia is on CYU's Top 5 Uni Campuses in Australia list, and it earns the spot: the heritage-listed Great Court, UQ Lakes, and what UQ calls the state's largest multi-sport precinct. The CityCat ferry has its own terminal, and UQ lists over 200 clubs and societies.
The feel: St Lucia is a campus you stay on all day, with study, sport and the lakes in one place.
A straight word first. On QILT student survey data, 68.6 per cent of UQ undergraduates and 62.9 per cent of UniMelb's rated their student support positively, both below the national average of 71.2 per cent. The services are there; go and find them before you need them.
Counselling and Psychological Services offers free short-term counselling, with a 24/7 crisis support service. Student Equity and Disability Support sorts out exam arrangements and extensions, and the Melbourne Peer Mentor Program gives first-semester students a mentor. Murrup Barak supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
UQ Counsellors offer 10 free sessions, and Accessibility and Welfare Advisers set up study and exam adjustments. The Get Set Program matches new students with a mentor. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit, running since 1984, helps with admissions, scholarships and learning support.
Here's the number most people notice. On QILT data via ComparED, 80.2 per cent of UQ undergraduate graduates who wanted full-time work had found it (national 76.2 per cent), against 61.6 per cent at UniMelb. Median salaries were $74,300 and $67,900. Ask each uni about graduates in your course.
Placements are run by each faculty; Arts, for example, offers internship subjects including a Parliamentary Internship. Melbourne Plus lists 150+ activities outside class, with a digital credential you can show employers. UniMelb's pages don't promise an internship.
UQ's named options include internships, research, Global Experiences and UQ Ventures for would-be founders, and the UQ Employability Award recognises what you do outside class. Some internships count for credit, depending on your faculty. UQ's pages don't promise an internship either.
You apply to UniMelb through VTAC and to UQ through QTAC (each state's admissions centre), and neither runs early offers. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus adjustment factors (bonus points for things like hardship, where you live or your subjects).
UQ's ATAR guarantee promises an offer to most degrees if your selection rank meets the published score and you have the required subjects, up to the main round on 14 January 2027 (Medicine and Veterinary Science are among the exceptions). Bonus points are capped at 5. 2027 guaranteed scores, with the Semester 1 2026 lowest selection rank in brackets: Commerce 82 (82), Science 80 (80).
UniMelb's guaranteed ATARs for 2027 are only for Access Melbourne applicants (such as regional, remote or financially disadvantaged students): 79 for Commerce and Science. Access Melbourne applications for 2027 closed on 9 October 2026. Lowest selection ranks for Semester 1 2026 (a guide): Commerce 92, Science 91. The two unis report these a little differently, so check each course page. Doing VCE? The free University of Melbourne Extension Program, taken in Year 11 or 12, can add 3 to 5 points to the total your ATAR is calculated from.
With a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and your share is capped, the same at both unis: $9,537 a year for Science or Engineering and $17,399 for Law or Commerce in 2026 (2027 amounts aren't out yet). A HECS-HELP government loan means nothing upfront.
UQ's Queensland Commitment Scholarship pays $7,000 a year, automatically, to students who get the maximum 5 financial hardship points through QTAC's Educational Access Scheme. UniMelb's Narrm Scholarship Program ($6,500 a year) closed for 2027 with Access Melbourne on 9 October 2026.
UniMelb's 2027 rates run from $448 to $786 a week at The Lofts and $459 to $639 at Lisa Bellear House; catered colleges are $759 to $939 a week. UQ's undated college prices run from $509 a week at International House to $777 full board at The Women's College, and UQ's Kev Carmody House starts from $414 a week (also undated).
