The University of Newcastle and the University of Wollongong have a lot in common. Each is based in a coastal NSW city, each has campuses along the coast and in Sydney, and each runs an early offer scheme for Year 12s.
UOW sits a few places higher in Australia in the 2027 rankings; on QILT's graduate data, more of UON's job-seeking graduates had found full-time work. So it comes down to your course, your region and how you plan to get in.
These two are closer than the rankings gap suggests. UOW sits a few places higher in Australia in both 2027 tables, while UON reports more students and is spread across more of the Hunter and Central Coast. Both are built around their home regions, with extra campuses in Sydney. Unless you're chasing a specific course, where you live may settle this more than reputation.
The University of Newcastle (UON) has been teaching since 1965. Its original campus is Callaghan, 140 hectares in a natural setting, with a Newcastle City campus built around NUspace and Central Coast campuses at Ourimbah and Gosford.
A member of the Australian Technology Network (ATN), UON says it has more than 37,000 students (no year given) and over 100 undergraduate degrees. It came 244th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (18th in Australia) and 20th in Australia in THE 2027. For you: a large, broad uni across the Hunter and Central Coast, with real depth in health.
The University of Wollongong (UOW) began in 1951 as a division of the university that later became UNSW, and gained its independence in 1975. Its main campus is in Wollongong, with campuses in Sydney (Liverpool and Sutherland) and down the South Coast.
UOW counts 33,044 students (no year given), 22,356 of them at the Wollongong campus. It came 195th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (13th in Australia) and 14th in Australia in THE 2027. For you: a mid-sized uni with one main campus doing most of the work and strong regional reach.

Day to day, these two teach in similar ways: degree-by-degree structures, semester-style calendars, and placements built into the professional courses. The real differences are at the edges. UON offers a route into medicine straight from school. UOW offers TAFE combined degrees. If either of those is what you want, it may decide this for you.
The standout at UON is medicine. The Joint Medical Program, run with the University of New England (UNE), is a five-year degree taught in Newcastle, on the Central Coast or in Armidale. There are 170 places and more than 3,000 applicants a year; you sit the UCAT ANZ (a medical admissions test), and there are no subject prerequisites.
Otherwise, UON has no uni-wide model: placements are built in where the profession needs them, such as 800 hours in the Bachelor of Nursing. It runs both semesters and trimesters, so check which calendar your degree uses.
UOW's standout is its TAFE combined degrees, where you complete a TAFE Advanced Diploma and a UOW bachelor's degree at the same time on a compressed timeline.
Like UON, it has no uni-wide model, so look at the degree. Placements are built into the professional ones: 840 hours in the Bachelor of Nursing and about 110 days in Primary Education. The main sessions are Autumn and Spring, with Autumn lectures starting on 1 March 2027, and some courses run in trimesters.
For most undergraduates, UON's research strength shows up in health. The Joint Medical Program is supported by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Local Health Districts, tying medical training closely to the region's health services.
UOW ranks a little higher in both 2027 world rankings, which lean heavily on research. Its Innovation Campus at North Wollongong is a research and technology precinct near the main campus. If research experience matters, ask at Open Day.
Our take: Callaghan feels like a uni in the bush. Bar on the Hill hosts live music, and Newcastle City is a different scene, with NUspace and the Conservatorium of Music. UON says it has over 100 clubs and societies. Callaghan is 12 km from Newcastle's CBD, served by buses and trains, and the new Gosford Central building is a short walk from Gosford station.
Our take: at UOW the beach is part of the deal, and the Campus East residence is near it. Free electric shuttle buses link the main campus to the train network. You'll find UniBar and the Pulse pool and gym, and clubs run through UniClubs. In Sydney, UOW Liverpool is about five minutes' walk from Liverpool station.
On QILT's student survey data, 73.1 per cent of UOW undergraduates rated their support positively, against 70.6 per cent at UON and a national average of 71.2 per cent. Both sit near the average.
On QILT graduate survey data (via ComparED), 81.5 per cent of UON's undergraduate graduates who wanted full-time work had found it, against 74.1 per cent at UOW and a national average of 76.2 per cent. A gap that size is worth asking each uni about for your own field.
The Careers Service is free for current and past students, with CareerHub and interview practice. Placements vary across study areas, and in some degrees you find your own. UON's pages don't promise an internship.
Careers & Employability runs Career Accelerate (a one-day simulation of a graduate assessment centre), a for-credit Career Ready Learning subject and the Careers Central job board. UOW's pages don't promise a job or internship.
Year 12s apply to both through UAC, the NSW and ACT admissions centre. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus any adjustment factors (bonus points for things like strong subjects, where your school is or disadvantage you've faced).
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and you pay a capped student contribution, the same at both unis. In 2026 the maximum was $4,738 a year for Nursing and Education, $9,537 for Science and Engineering, and $17,399 for Law and Business (2027 amounts aren't out yet). HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront.
UON's 2027 weekly fees (listed excluding GST) start at $231.82 a week per person for a shared studio, and most self-catered single rooms run about $254 to $337 a week. UOW's 2027 rates run from $303 a week (a catered shared twin room at International House) to $425 a week at Kooloobong Village.
International students: check each uni's international fees page.

Neither is the better uni; they suit different postcodes and plans. Your next step: compare the entry score and placement hours for your course at each, then get to both Open Days. Walk from the station or shuttle stop to class, price a room, and picture three years there.
