The University of Tasmania and the University of Newcastle have more in common than Bass Strait suggests. Both are multi-campus unis outside the mainland capitals, both sit in Australia's top 20 in QS and THE for 2027, and on QILT exactly the same share of undergraduates (77.9 per cent) rated their experience positively.
What settles it is place, and the path in. UTAS is a whole state's uni, with specialist marine, Antarctic, maritime and agricultural institutes. UON is built around Callaghan, a city campus and the Central Coast, with plenty of entry schemes for NSW students.
On reputation, call it a draw: each uni beats the other in one of the two big 2027 rankings, and both sit inside Australia's top 20. The real difference is shape. UTAS is a whole state's uni, spread across three regions of Tasmania plus a Sydney campus for nursing and paramedicine. UON is built around the Hunter and the Central Coast, with Callaghan as its original home.
The University of Tasmania is the state's uni, and an old one: it says it began more than 130 years ago. In 2025, 45 per cent of its new domestic students were the first in their family at uni.
It teaches across the state: Sandy Bay and CBD sites in Hobart, Inveresk and Newnham in Launceston, and Cradle Coast in Burnie. There's also a Sydney campus at Lilyfield for nursing and paramedicine only. UTAS came 311th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (20th in Australia). You can stay close to home anywhere in Tasmania, or move there for a speciality.
The University of Newcastle (UON) says it has been teaching since 1965, and it has more than 37,000 students on its own current figure. Callaghan, the original campus, covers 140 hectares in a natural setting. There's also Newcastle City campus, centred on NUspace, and on the Central Coast the bushland Ourimbah campus and the new Gosford Central building.
UON came 244th in the QS World University Rankings 2027 (18th in Australia), ahead of UTAS, but THE 2027 placed it behind. When rankings split like that, the unis are close.

The choice here is mostly about what's on offer. UTAS has specialities (marine and Antarctic science, maritime, agriculture) built into its campuses and slightly higher teaching scores. UON has the Joint Medical Program and a set of free enabling courses. If neither of those is your plan, compare the specific course pages side by side.
UTAS teaches in semesters, and your course page sets out how your degree works. What stands out is specialist teaching on its campuses:
Not ready for a bachelor's yet? University College runs a free University Preparation Program. On QILT, 82.5 per cent of UTAS undergraduates rated teaching quality positively (national 80.4 per cent).
At UON, check whether your degree runs on semesters or trimesters, as its key dates include both.
Its big draw for future doctors is the Joint Medical Program (JMP), a five-year Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine run with the University of New England (UNE), studied in Newcastle, on the Central Coast or in Armidale. There are 170 places and more than 3,000 applicants a year, so it's tough, but open to school leavers.
UON also runs free enabling courses that prepare you for uni, including Open Foundation and Yapug (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people). UON says they give guaranteed entry to 70+ degrees. On QILT, 79.8 per cent rated UON's teaching positively, about the national average.
At UTAS, research strength shows up in where you're taught: IMAS, the Australian Maritime College or the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture. Ask how undergraduates get involved in their work, and about honours.
UON's health and industry links are the most visible part: the Hunter New England and Central Coast Local Health Districts support the JMP, and some degrees include industry projects. Ask your faculty what's open to undergraduates.
Sandy Bay has libraries, Unigym and childcare, and the free UniHopper shuttle runs to the CBD sites. UTAS says students can currently ride Metro Tasmania buses for free. Clubs run through TUSA, the Tasmanian University Students Association; with peer engagement scores on the low side, join one early. The feel: small-city and relaxed, with a campus in every corner of the state.
Callaghan, 12 km north-west of the Newcastle CBD, has Bar on the Hill for events and live music. Newcastle City campus has the Conservatorium of Music and the Watt Space student gallery, and Gosford Central is a short walk from Gosford station. UON lists over 100 clubs and societies. The feel: a classic bushland campus where you can easily spend the whole day.
On QILT's student survey, 68 per cent of UTAS undergraduates and 70.6 per cent of UON's rated their student support positively, both a little under the national 71.2 per cent. Book in early, before you need it.
Counselling is free, in person or online, and Accessibility Advisers support students with disability. PASS study groups and 24 Hour Study Support cover the academic side, and Speerment supports autistic students. The Riawunna Centre supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
Counselling is free, with an after-hours line, and AccessAbility supports students with a disability or medical condition, and carers. Academic Learning Support and PASS help with study. The Wollotuka Institute supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
On QILT graduate survey data (via ComparED), 81.9 per cent of UTAS graduates and 81.5 per cent of UON's who were looking for full-time work had found it: about the same, and both above the national 76.2 per cent. Median salaries were $79,300 at UTAS and $74,900 at UON. Ask about your field.
Career Connect offers job listings, resume feedback and mock interviews, and UTAS says more than 1,400 employers recruit through it. Its careers pages don't promise an internship. Sydney campus nursing and paramedicine students do placements in Sydney and rural NSW.
The Careers Service is free, with CareerHub and a Resume Reviewer. Placements vary by study area, and in some degrees you find your own. Nursing includes 800 hours of clinical placement. UON's pages don't promise an internship either.
Your selection rank is your ATAR plus any adjustment factors: bonus points for things like your results or where you live.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), the government pays part of your fees and your capped share is the same at both unis. The 2026 maximum ran from $4,738 a year (Nursing, Education) to $17,399 (Law, Commerce). HECS-HELP, a government loan, means you don't pay upfront. 2027 amounts aren't out yet.
International students: see UON's international hub and UTAS's own pages.

Neither is the better uni. Open the course page for your degree at each and compare the entry score, where it's taught and the placements. Then visit the campus you'd actually attend, and price a room nearby.
