The University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) and the University of Southern Queensland (UniSQ) are both Queensland unis in the Regional Universities Network. That's where the likeness ends. UniSC runs up the coast north of Brisbane, from Moreton Bay to Hervey Bay. UniSQ is centred on Toowoomba, with campuses at Ipswich and Springfield and many degrees External or Online.
So it comes down to which side of Brisbane you live on, which degree you want, and how much time you want on campus.
Both are regional unis in RUN, but they pull in different directions. UniSC is spread up the coast north of Brisbane, has a strong health focus, and its students rate it well. UniSQ is older, ranks higher, has stronger graduate job numbers and is set up for flexible study from Toowoomba and Brisbane's west, with a lower student experience score. Where you live will settle a lot of this.
UniSC opened in 1996 and had 20,782 students in 2025. Its main campus is Sippy Downs on the Sunshine Coast, with Queensland campuses at Moreton Bay (Petrie), Caboolture, Fraser Coast (Hervey Bay) and Gympie.
Health and sport are big focuses. It sits in the 851 to 900 band in QS 2027.
What it means for you: students rate it well. On QILT data, 80.9 per cent of undergraduates rated their experience positively, above the national 76.5 per cent.
UniSQ turns 60 in 2027 and had 21,242 students in 2025; in 2024, 46.3 per cent of its domestic students came from regional or remote areas. Toowoomba is the main campus, with Ipswich (health and law) and Springfield (engineering and aviation) about 30 minutes from Brisbane.
It ranks higher than UniSC: equal 411th in QS 2027. Its QILT student experience score is lower, at 71.5 per cent.
What it means for you: stronger graduate job numbers, but a less glowing report from current students.
QS World University Rankings 2027: 851 to 900 band (equal 33rd in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: 551 to 600 band (equal 33rd in Australia)
Student experience: 80.9% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 74.5% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $73,300 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
QS World University Rankings 2027: equal 411th (23rd in Australia)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: 376 to 400 band (25th in Australia)
Student experience: 71.5% of undergraduates rate their overall educational experience positively (national average 76.5%)
Graduate employment: 85% of undergraduate graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national average 76.2%)
Graduate median salary: $83,300 for undergraduate graduates in full-time work (national average $74,000)
Both now teach in trimesters, so the calendar won't split them. The real difference is mode. At UniSC, the specialist health degrees are taught on campus at Sippy Downs. UniSQ is built so you can do a lot of your degree away from campus, with placements and residential schools filling the gaps. Decide how much time you want on campus, then check where your exact course is taught.
From 2027 UniSC moves to three trimesters (Trimester 1 starts 8 March). If you see older advice about UniSC semesters, it's out of date. Most degrees include work integrated learning.
Health degrees: Paramedicine, Midwifery, Physio and OT are taught only at Sippy Downs. Physiotherapy (Honours) is new (first students in 2025) and accredited with conditions. Nursing Science runs on all five Queensland campuses, but its course page says it is not yet accredited or approved; UniSC expects the outcome in November 2026, so check its status with UniSC before you apply.
UniSQ already runs on trimesters; Trimester 1 2027 starts on 15 February, though not every degree takes all three intakes. You can study on campus, External or Online. Nursing External, for example, puts theory online, with residential schools and placements.
Placements: 840 hours in Nursing, 80 days in Primary Education. Where you study depends on the degree: Paramedicine is Ipswich only.
The Sunshine Coast Health Institute at Birtinya, next to the university hospital, hosts some OT classes. Into environmental science? Ask about the K'gari Research Station and sea turtle research at the Milbi Centre.
Mount Kent Observatory near Toowoomba is, UniSQ says, the only ground-based Southern Hemisphere support for NASA's TESS planet-hunting mission. Ask how undergraduates get involved in your field.
Sippy Downs is the hub, and sport is part of its identity: the 3,000-seat UniSC Arena (home of the Sunshine Coast Lightning), an Olympic-standard pool and an athletics track. There are simulated nursing and paramedic labs and an Engineering Learning Hub too.
The feel: green, sporty and spread out, with a coastal pace.
Toowoomba is the residential heart, with a Japanese Garden and the Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre. Ipswich has a Paramedic Simulation House; Springfield has a Boeing 737-800 flight simulator. A free shuttle links the three, and the Student Guild runs clubs.
The feel: Toowoomba is a proper country-city campus you can live on, while Ipswich and Springfield are commuter campuses.
Work integrated learning is in most degrees, and the health courses carry real hours: about 1,000 in Physiotherapy (Honours) and OT. On QILT data, 74.5 per cent of UniSC graduates looking for full-time work had found it (national 76.2 per cent), with a median salary of $73,300.
Career ready offers careers guidance, and a Placement Bursary helps with travel and accommodation for mandatory placements. On QILT, 85 per cent of UniSQ graduates looking for full-time work had found it, with a median salary of $83,300.
That's a real gap: about 10 points on jobs and $10,000 on salary. But it's a whole-of-uni figure, so check your course on ComparED.
Both take applications through QTAC. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus bonus points (adjustment factors), capped at 10 at both.
UniSC: the Early Offer Guarantee gives an offer on your principal's recommendation; 2027 applications closed on 9 October 2026. Access UniSC adds 2 ranks for living in its regions and up to 6 for subjects like Physics or a language. Lowest adjusted ATAR, 2026 intake (15 January round): 96.00 for Physiotherapy (Honours), 85.00 for Paramedicine and Midwifery, 60 for Nursing Science, which is not yet accredited or approved (check its status with UniSC before you apply).
UniSQ: UniSQ Early Entry offers a place before your ATAR; 2027 applications close on 15 October 2026. You get 3 ranks for finishing at a listed school, 2 if you're first in your family at uni, and up to 2 for living near Toowoomba or Ipswich. QTAC's lowest selection rank for Nursing, Trimester 1 2026: 60.10 at Toowoomba and 63.45 at Ipswich.
In a Commonwealth supported place (CSP, a government-subsidised place) your share is capped and the same at both: in 2026, $4,738 a year for nursing, $9,537 for engineering or physio. A HECS-HELP loan means nothing upfront.
UniSQ's Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship (up to $20,000, ATAR 90 to 97.95) and Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship (up to $24,000, ATAR 98+) are automatic if UniSQ is your first preference. UniSC's Vice-Chancellor's Academic Excellence Scholarship pays $3,000 a year for an ATAR of 95+; you apply by 30 November 2026.
UniSQ's three Toowoomba colleges list 2027 fees of about $171 to $253 a week for most rooms, utilities included; single-occupancy flats were $281 a week in 2026, the latest price published. UniSC doesn't provide student accommodation; private providers near Sippy Downs set their own prices.
International students: see UniSC's fees schedule and UniSQ's international fees page.
